Note that r_tf_outboard_mid
is the radius of the midline of the TF outer leg. The calculation of the midline includes the case thickness, which can be substantial. The actual winding pack has a smaller major radius.

Ken McClements has developed a new analytical model based on the vacuum Maxwell equations for picture frame coils. The current model by @mkovari is an empirical fit to a numerically determined ripple for D-shaped coils in a conventional aspect ratio tokamak.
The new model proposed by Ken is as follows:
