The BPW96 transistor looks an awful lot like the SFH4550 when dropped on the bench. Builders would find it easier to get the right part in the right hole if the phototransistor were physically distinct from the emitter.
A suitable alternative might be the 3mm BPW85. It has almost the same response as the BPW96 but in a smaller package.
