Currently one has access to the optical versions of the .otf fonts, but it is suggested to use them as 'weights'.
It should be easy to use them in their designed way, i.e. make them selected according to font size.
I'm not sure if that's a good idea or not. Of course it's consistent with the OpenType specification. But using the font variants as weights seems more useful in the context of text documents.
Of course this change would be somewhat fundamental because it's an API change.
