What happens when you try with an older revision of umthesis -- say, d6fb7fe45a50ce819ef5d8348886961850cfdd1e? Do you know what revision those three dissertations used?
Ben,
I reverted to using the files that Tim Wood used for his dissertation, and everything formats correctly.
Also, FYI, Carlin's Dissertation (Feb, 2012) also has "correct" formatting, so the change to "break" the style files in the git hub occurred in the last four months.
Also, where are the "official" files? I've contacted scholarworks.umass.edu, but I have not yet received a reply.
I am attaching the cls and clo files that "work" and which differ from those that are in the git hub: umthstd.clo, umthesis.cls
Let me know if you have other questions.

I'll spend a few minutes on this issue today (especially since I see you're defending within the month).

Thanks Ben,
At the moment, I've resorted to using the style sheets and class files that the few previous candidates have used. Also, if I hear back from the UMass grad school and/or library, regarding the "official" style sheets, I'll let you know.

OK, 6e9c7a3dfd introduced the mixed-case formatting of which you speak. I'll see if I can fix it quickly...
As I just mentioned in issue #1, I'm inclined to remove hyperref support for now. Objections?
No objects to removing hyperref, although it's nice to click on chapter titles in the toc, and be taken there right away. Also, by "for now" do you mean, "indefinitely"? :)
I think the list-of-tables (lot) and list-of-figures (lof) issue is much more pressing ... because without those pages being correctly populated, the thesis I suspect would not be accepted by the grad school.
Is the hyperref issue somehow the culprit of the lot and lof problem? If so, then yes definitely strike out hyperref support.
By "for now" I mean until (I (learn TeX better) && (have enough time to fix text-case issues)) || (someone else submits a patch that fixes hyperref + case issues)
Ben -- I've heard back from the scholarworks at UMass, concerning the "official" style sheets. I'll email Elisa Campbell and ask her to send me and you the style files.
Filip,
The style files you're looking for are not provided by the graduate
school, but they can be obtained by contacting OIT. If you contact
Elisa Campbell at campbell@oit.umass.edu she can assist you with the
template formatting and get you in touch with the folks at OIT who
have the appropriate LaTeX style sheets. Please let us know if there
is anything else we can do.

As of today 08/03/12 I'm having the same problem with the list of figures and tables. They don't print. But when I comment the \appendix they appear in the document. Has this issue been resolved already? Cheers.
i'm using the style sheets and class files from pre-march 2012; everything's working fine
you should be able to get them from the git hub
if not, let me know and i'll email them to you

When I format my dissertation using the sample class files on this git hub (and the same thing happens when I render the sample pdf umthsmpl), the formatting is not the same as the PDF documents that are posted to http://scholarworks.umass.edu/cs_diss/
For example, in the following dissertations: http://scholarworks.umass.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1365&context=open_access_dissertations http://scholarworks.umass.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1478&context=open_access_dissertations http://scholarworks.umass.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1495&context=open_access_dissertations
The words "ACKNOWLEDGMENTS", "LIST OF FIGURES" and "LIST OF TABLES" appear in the table of contents (All capitalized), but in the document that I generate, those words are NOT capitalized. In addition, umthsmpl.pdf has List of Figures and List of Tables pages that are empty.
I have tried compiling using "pdflatex, bibtex, pdflatex, pdflatex" as well as the native "bibtex, latex, ps2pdf" etc. method. Both methods generate the same "incorrectly-formatted" documents.
Now here's where it gets a little odd. IF I remove the appendix from the .tex file, the list of tables and list of figures pages populate fine, but still the capitalization in the table of contents page is not right.
The three dissertations above (wood, olsen, brunette) were using style sheets that were on the git hub BEFORE four months ago, when many of the files were changed.
Because the List of Tables and List of Figures does NOT populate correctly, I am presuming that there is an error in some of the class and/or style files. Can somebody confirm?
