Possibly of interest from O'Reilly: "This hands-on guide demonstrates how the flexibility of the command line can help you become a more efficient and productive data scientist. You'll learn how to combine small, yet powerful, command-line tools to quickly obtain, scrub, explore, and model your data. Discover why the command line is an agile, scalable, and extensible technology. Even if you're already comfortable processing data with, say, Python or R, you'll greatly improve your data science workflow by also leveraging the power of the command line."

Interesting to note that the author has bundled all the software into a virtual Ubuntu environment that can be installed with Vagrant. Includes Python, R, and various command line tools. The command line tools are listed here: http://datascienceatthecommandline.com/#tools.

FYI, we get the O'Reilly book package in Safari Tech Books Online, so this and other O'Reilly books are accessible online for free. And Safari is not quite as obnoxious as our other ebook offerings.
