[UMMZ Birds 146800] Oriolus oriolus - Location/Date/Species Error ? #106

Open paintedstork opened 6 years ago

paintedstork commented 6 years ago

Hi there, I am a bit worried about this specimen. #146799 [previous specimen in this species] was collected by Koelz from a location 500km away. This can only mean that there is a location error in one of the specimens - or may be the date. The second, more serious implication, is on the identity of these specimens. One is tagged as O. kundoo while the other as O. oriolus. Assuming they were collected on the same day, possibly from the same site, one after another - could they be of same species?

146800 is the only hard evidence I could track till date for the occurrence of O. oriolus within the political boundaries of India. If the ID changes to O. kundoo, then it would mean a bit of work to search to obtain any other evidence or remove it from the India checklist.

Hope you will relook at the locality and possibly on the identity of these species.

Thanks & best rgds Praveen

I'll check these specimens. The different collection localities on the same day is not so much of a problem. He had several parties sometimes in very different locations and everything was listed with Koelz as the collector. We tried to make an itinerary for his trips a few years ago and discovered this.

146800 is the only hard evidence I could track till date for the

occurrence of O. oriolus within the political boundaries of India. If the ID changes to O. kundoo, then it would mean a bit of work to search to obtain any other evidence or remove it from the India checklist.

Hope you will relook at the locality and possibly on the identity of these species.

I have looked at the birds. 146799 was reidentified by Pam Rasmussen, so it had originally been oriolus. Here is an image of the tag. Let me know if you want any other images.
