[UMMZ Birds 208181] Geronticus eremita - Other Catalogue Number missing #49

Closed bradmROM closed 7 years ago

bradmROM commented 7 years ago

Hi again:

I have tracked this specimen from the odd phonetic? locality for the specimen. It was exchanged to you in May 1964 from the ROM and the ROM number for it is 33.9.1.49. This number does not appear in the spreadsheet you gave me of specimens from ROM.

I have asked a person in ROM to have a look at the locality and see if he can determine what it may be. He has a smattering of Arabic.

No, I know no one there but one of the folks in West Asian here has excavated in Syria and has a good knowledge of it. He has to think what it may mean.

This is a comment I received back from Rob Mason in our West Asian area of World Cultures Dept of the ROM. So, it is an area of the Syrian Desert before the artificial boundaries were dawn by the European powers.

I had a look at the card. The first word actually looks like "wakr" to me, which is arabic for nest (or hole, or den). The middle word is actually "ez" and so would be written "al" although for so-called Golden Letters" (like Z) you do not pronounce the "L" so it is often written as it sounds. "zbede" may be something like Zubaydi, the al-Zubaydi are an important tribe in N. Iraq and E Syria. So Wakr al-Zubaydi maybe? As it is a bird, the placename might be problematic.
