What is `variable` in the taxonomy of named entities? #12

It would be helpful to know what the class of variable is supposed to mean in Table 5. Any examples how it would be used in annotation?

BTW, ideally, each of the classes, types and subtypes should have a definition and at least one example of UMR annotation where it occurs.
