What version of R should we recommend? #10

Hi everyone,

I think this question might be applicable to the whole unconf, but I ask it here because it is nominally quieter.

Let me outline my thinking, which should not be new to anyone here:

  1. Updating R can be disruptive, especially if you need to reinstall all your packages, e.g. 3.4 -> 3.5
  2. If someone is "too-far" behind they could run into unexpected problems, then be faced with a disruptive install while they would rather be doing something else...

Where should we set the line in terms of a recommendation? The current version is 3.5.3; I suspect 3.5.2 is OK, but I don't know beyond that.

It should surprise no-one that @jennybc has already dealt with the issue:

Accordingly, I suggest we assert that 3.5 and 3.4 will be OK.
