What does *casual* dress code mean? #21

I suspect I’m not the only person wondering what business casual means to John Deere! Can anyone provide further guidance? Are jeans okay?

ijlyttle commented 5 years ago

UPDATE - PLEASE NOTE

The dress code for the entire conference has been changed from to from business-casual to casual.

Details below, but in short: nice jeans are OK, sandals are not OK.

Apologies to @AmeliaMN for retconning her original post 🤓

Some one who has been there told me:

Try button shirt tuck in or out. Avoid low cut. Black or khaki pants. No jeans, no skinnys. No wrinkles. Try shoes or nice western boots. Avoid heels for you get a tour of the shop floor. Some jewelry ok. Jacket if you get cold. No perfume. Same big attitude. 😎

Thanks Ranae!

Hi everyone! I checked with a colleague who works at the facility and for Sunday, casual is ok (no shorts, jeans & t-shirts are fine). As for Monday and Tuesday, business casual is required (I highly recommend that button down shirts and polos be tucked in).

Thanks Nik!

Just FYI because I know everyone is wondering, I'll be wearing a dress like the one I had on for my rstudio::conf talk on Monday. Not sure what I'll wear Sunday, as I only ever wear skirts and dresses, but probably something a little more casual, like what I had on for OpenVisConf 2017. Dress codes for women are always more complicated!

Sorry for the late notice, but I just found out that John Deere Financial is going casual. Here's the officially stated dress code per John Deere Financial:

Dress Code Policy

The John Deere Financial Dress for Your Day policy balances an employee's comfort and self-expression with a productive, professional office environment. In general, employees should keep the following in mind when getting ready for work:

Clothing should always be clean, well-fitted, not faded, frayed, or torn. Undergarments should not be visible, and clothing should not be revealing in either fit or style.

Ethnic attire reflective of racial or cultural heritage is appropriate under both business casual and casual dress guidelines.

Employees are responsible for reviewing the dress code and using good judgment when choosing what to wear to work. Depending on your schedule, you may choose to follow business casual or casual guidelines.

Managers are responsible for ensuring that attire aligns with the intentions of the dress code. Employees who sit at a JDF location can follow this dress policy. JDF employees who sit at a non-JDF location are to follow the location’s dress code policy. Additional questions can be directed to your HR representative.

If you have questions about what is appropriate to wear for an event or meeting, please discuss with your supervisor.

Some examples of business casual and casual attire is listed below.

You mean "going business casual" or "going casual"?

For the past ten years, I have almost always attended conferences in t-shirts and flip-flops (except a few times when I need to give a talk on a particular day). I'm so glad that JDF changed the dress code just yesterday evening from business casual to casual. With jeans and t-shirts being considered appropriate, now I only need to find a pair of shoes. Yay.

I dress “casually” so I was afraid I would have to go buy some new clothes! Glad that that there are a lot of options for everyone.

I almost exploded my carry on suitcase packing in leather shoes, pants and button-up shirts. Why have I not read this?

What's the temperature situation at the office? I know some business environments tend toward meat locker temperatures (to accommodate people in suits) while others are at more humane standards.
