The Mandarin Chinese Union Version translation has two editions the Shen and Shangti. Which of these are we looking for?

da1nerd commented 9 years ago

@Bastion- let's go with both. The app supports multiple versions under a single language.

IllustriousMelchior commented 9 years ago

I have a USFM of the Urdu version. It is not public domain, but I contacted the organization, and they said the text is royalty free and can be freely downloaded and distributed. Will that work?

da1nerd commented 9 years ago

@jag3773 see above comment? And below :)

IllustriousMelchior commented 9 years ago

In my research I have found that the Chinese Union Version is in Mandarin. The required versions from etherpad state that we need the simplified and traditional Chinese Union Bible as well as the Mandarin Union Version. It seems as though they are in the same language. Is there something else that differentiates the listed Mandarin version from the Chinese Union Bible?

EDIT: removed link to etherpad bible imports. - @neutrinog

jag3773 commented 9 years ago

@Bastion- The texts either need to be Public Domain or CC-BY-SA. Little else will be sufficient.

@richmahn can help with the Chinese questions.

IllustriousMelchior commented 9 years ago

@jag3773 With your python code for submitting texts, what is the checking entity? Is that the individual who uploaded the file, or is it something else? I don't want to start submitting nonsense, but I am not sure what that is referring to.

jag3773 commented 9 years ago

The checking identity would be whoever was responsible for the translation. For most of these existing texts you'll want to put the names of the Bible Societies and/or publishers of the text. For example, the Arabic Van Dyke version that we imported lists "Syrian Mission;American Bible Society;PNG Bible Translation Association".

IllustriousMelchior commented 9 years ago

The four texts that are available from ebible.org Arabic Van Dyke, Chinese Union Simplified, Chinese Union Traditional, and Russian are in the public domain. I checked the python script for importing them, and it works on Windows 7 so long as local_res has the leading slash removed from \tmp{0}. I also found a free online tool that can convert some common Bible formats into the usfm format. The tool can be found here: http://freely-given.org/Software/BibleDropBox/. As for the other texts, I am still looking for public domain texts. I found a copy of an Urdu text, but it is copyrighted and they don't allow derivative works, so I am still looking. I have not found a single instance, copyrighted or not, of the other texts, so the hunt is still on for them.

@Bastion- @richmahn and @neutrinog We need to have a meeting to go over the current state of this and what needs to be done here. Can you three schedule a meeting for next week? I'll be out of town but I think @richmahn can spearhead the meeting.

richmahn commented 9 years ago

I'm finally hear to answer questions and now to spearhead this. As for the Chinese verison, @Bastion- , sorry for answering this finally. Shen and Shangti are two ways to say "God" and some Chinese prefer one way over the other...kind of like our LORD/Jehovah/Yahwey issue in English. I could see which is most prefered (I see Shangti mostly used at my Chinese church) but if we can use both, that is good.

richmahn commented 9 years ago

@Bastion- Most apps, from YouVersion to Chinese-specific Bible apps usually have both version available.

richmahn commented 9 years ago

When is everyone available? Monday is out for me as there are already loads of meetings that day. Please let me know your availability. Tuesday is best for me, any time from 8am to 5pm Mountain.

richmahn commented 9 years ago

@Bastion- Make sure you are also including both Simplified and Traditional Chinese script Bibles for Chinese. So yeah, there can be a lot due to the script one uses and the form of God they use, and there are new translations that also updated the Union version (translated 100 years ago) to use modern day punctuation.

da1nerd commented 9 years ago

tuesday works for me.

IllustriousMelchior commented 9 years ago

Tuesday also works for me. I would need to meet before 11.

richmahn commented 9 years ago

I totally missed this on setting up something yesterday. Can you guys meet today?

da1nerd commented 9 years ago

I can but @Bastion- may be busy.

richmahn commented 9 years ago

Ah ok. Today is best for me if we can, any time is good.

richmahn commented 9 years ago

Hey @Bastion- and @neutrinog, We need to figure out when we can meet on this, if possible today. I leave on a trip to Montana tomorrow; may possibly be able to meet tomorrow morning before I leave, but better if we can talk today.

da1nerd commented 9 years ago

I'm available any time.

@jag3773 @richmahn do we need to do anything else with this issue?

jag3773 commented 8 years ago

Waiting on GLDs to tell us what to import...
