portable linux builds fine and runs at least on Manjaro, Ubuntu 20.04/24.04 and Fedora WS 40.

Would y'all prefer to have the fix for #3011 submitted under a new PR or should that be included in this one?

since the changes in this PR are minimal, I would include the changes from the second PR
