Hopefully this is a more modern & modular code style.

TODO (maybe not all on this branch):

[ ] Population density layer
[x] Use mocha to write unit tests

Region selection:

[x] Selected region model (like data-layer.js, other view-state-modelling)
[x] Interstitial code in map-controller
[x] Show region info in left panel

Date picker:

[ ] Gradient color for area chart
[ ] Area chart data from actual data sources
[ ] Make date format more consistent
[ ] Actual date selection (mouse-over & click handlers)
