attempt # 2 to clean up some of the code in main. i've used off-the-shelf EE libraries, but kinda felt like writing something more strongly-typed. i think it came out nice, lmk what you think. includes unit tests for the EE.

I'd like to think a bit harder about how this fits together and how it compares to what we had before, but looks pretty neat! thx!
