Write a migration guide #5631

Breaking changes should have migration guides in addition to changelogs.

Ideally this would be ready for the beta, so people could try it without having to figure out migration themselves, but then we probably need another for the final release.

I sketched out some high-level things in the changelog and release notes. I solicited feedback.
