Basic linting adherence #501

All modifications done manually, avoiding massive style changes.
Also adds a tox environment for linting (tox -e lint).
No extra plugins are enabled, for now.

I mostly run pylance with typing/isort/black myself, with flake + plugins as a check of last resort, but I'm happy to test ruff here instead. :)
