Opportunity for corporate transparency scrapers in the Middle East #156

Hey Guys,

I am in Amman, Jordan and I was talking to a data journalist from the Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism. They have identified corporate registraries for some Middle Eastern countries and need help scraping. Some authorities have realized that people are using these registries to find corruption and have been removing selections from the registries. So I would like to help the reporters get the data asap.

I am building a scraper for Lebanon business registry while I am here. It is challenging since the text is in Arabic but they are still just websites and scraping is basically the same.

I thought I would ask this crowd if anyone would be interested to help make scrapers to help reporters investigate corruption around the world. I will start a project and give more specifics if any of you are interested.

cc @CountCulture on this, in case there's any sort of scraping architecture or volunteers that OpenCorporates has or knows of that might be well-suited to this task.

@LindsayYoung, if you make a project for it and kick it off, please drop us a link here. I know I'd at least drive people towards it, and see where I can be of help.

We'd happy to help with this. We've already scraped Tunisia ( https://opencorporates.com/companies/tn) and some of the Emirates, and have looked at other countries but it's sometimes a little challenging without locals to help with language/local understanding.
