No particular point in mind. I had made the file and needed somewhere to put it before I lost it. I'm not actively working on it.
GSA now offering via an API.

Lots of discussion on this over at the Open Data SE: http://opendata.stackexchange.com/questions/1/is-there-a-list-of-all-us-government-agencies-and-sub-agencies-and-is-it-availab
@aaronsnow points out usgovernmentmanual.gov, which has a PDF org chart and list of committees. It is not in data form at all, but I bet they've got better data inside OFR, NARA, and GPO (who jointly administer this manual).
Actually the entire government manual is available in XML. You can download the current (2013) edition, or separately download individual sections, from here: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/GOVMAN-2013-11-06/content-detail.html . I can't vouch for the quality of the XML, but it is a remarkably comprehensive document.
This repo is an awesome idea. I do want to point to an official source for agency information: https://www.federalregister.gov/api/v1/agencies
The GSA also has one inside this repository, but it's pretty bare by comparison: https://github.com/GSA/digital-strategy
Is this meant to be more comprehensive/useful than FR's data? Worth combining with theirs?
