Allow the use of alternative backend methods? (nlme, merlin, ?)

Bayesian estimation methods as well?

Possible additional methods:

[x] PQL (via the lme wrapper function in Achana et al 2021, see also MASS::glmmPQL)
[ ] merlin
Bayesian estimation:
- [ ] via MCMCglmm
- [ ] via rstan or other packages?
- [x] via brms
