"Download this image" functionality #14

Problem: "Download this image" functionality is giving user problems and works differently than before. 1) After clipping an article using the clipping tool, the "Download this image" link (see here): screen shot 2014-10-21 at 12 55 47 pm when clicked, instead of a box popping up to allow user to save as jpeg, the window is replaced with an image of just the clipping, no text or buttons or scroll bar, or anything. see here: screen shot 2014-10-21 at 1 10 51 pm

2) User can right-click to save image, but is apparently only able to save as png. This adds an additional step for the user. (I tried this in safari and was able to right-click and save as jpeg) User is using firefox.

3) Ideally functionality would be like Chronicling America/our old version, where once the "Download this image" link is clicked, the image is saved at that time, cutting out the extra step of having to right-click and save. See functionality of Chronicling America by clicking the "Download this image" link here: http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn85042303/1914-10-21/ed-1/seq-1/print/image_681x648_from_1212%2C498_to_3968%2C3123/

In firefox: Comment from user: I've just visited the digital newspaper site and find that the clipping function you restored can only be saved as a .png with "download this image" -- it does not give me the option of opening the file in Preview and I have to choose "save file as" with a right click and then it is only a .png. I see that I can save it to the clipboard by copying the image with a right click, but this then means I have an additional step to saving it as a .jpeg. I visited the Chronicling America site and the clipping function there works as yours did before. Do you have a suggestion for how I can quickly save as a .jpeg? At this point I can right click the image before using the clipping function so clipping does not give me the functionality I need. Thanks for your help!

fyi in safari, right-clicking on image to save is saving as jpeg by default. we still want to get the force download back if possible though...Thanks!

This was an error in the viewer, and has been fixed. I also can't reproduce the PNG situation. Nor can @duncanbarth. We may have to get more information from the user, but at least for now we're set with proper forced downloading.

ok great, I just emailed her to try it again and let me know. I tried it in safari and it is working properly now. Thanks guys!

No problem :)

If things are good for the user, please let me know and we can close this ticket. I'm very curious about the PNG thing, though.

Have not heard back from user as to whether it's working for her or not. Once I hear, I will post either way. If I don't hear in a week, we'll assume all's well and close the ticket. Thanks! :)

Ok, I haven't heard back from the user so I'm going to assume that everything is now working fine for her. We can close this ticket. Thanks!
