another thought: could there be a way that audience members could send a text message from their phone using normal texting, that would appear in the chat? they would only see the chat on the projection in the space, or on their laptop / mobile device if they are watching the stage online, but they could contribute to the chat by texting. if this is easier than a separate app??
I believe this would require a number to text to …
it would require setting up something that directs the text not only to UpStage but to the correct stage (eg previously the stream went to the UpStage server then is channeled to a stage by the object container on the stage
Great if possible :)

since it's difficult to access and use the chat window if you are watching a performance on a phone, would it be possible to have a stand-alone chat window for mobile devices?
i know that chats like IRC can be embedded in html pages (we've done this in the past with other interfaces, e.g. during the 101010 festival server meltdown, we had an IRC chat that we embedded in the UpStage website, & the same chat was also accessible through IRC software), & i know that UpStage is more complicated than that, but it would be a really useful feature for hybrid performances and presentations, where there is a gathered audience watching a projection of the stage. technically they can load the stage on their phones and enter chat text, however this is really not easy and would take a lot of attention away from the presentation. if there was a simple chat interface that they could access and enter chat in via their phone while watching the screen, this would be a great way to interact.
this is sort of related to #704 - although that issue is about the player chat, and this one is about the audience chat; but maybe the same solution would solve both issues?)
