Upstreaming some patches from Foundries #21

These are all fairly general and easily reusable, so I'd just as soon have them in the upstream repo. I do wish there were test cases for some of the new things, but none of them are critical features, so that's not a dealbreaker for me. There are additional things in https://github.com/foundriesio/aktualizr that I'd be willing to consider also upstreaming, but I think they need a bit of work, justification, and/or tests.
