Right now it is not clear whether I am allowed to read this code, or what rights I might be forfeiting by doing so.

Reading the contracts is very much allowed. The code is publicly visible on Etherscan too.

We can and should get a permissive license on here. Some contracts here (ie Planet Sale) are intended to be used/adopted, rather than just read.

Absolutely agreed. Give me a couple days to sort out the right solution, but either way, we'll definitely release a more permissive approach.
