Any preferences on tagging or release conventions, and the tag to use for the submission version?

Use tag 20230502SubmissionVersion

I was going to say:

use tag '20230502' or 'v20230502' and put in the description that this is the version as submitted.

Either way works.

I believe you do not mention either journal or the submission ID. Just "for submission to journal".
