Select the datasets

We should add the relevant datasets to the repo, and verify that their licenses are correct. Document the sources as well. Let's put the list of all datasets here so we can compare them

Dataset "importance of religion per us state": Link to data source.

• Paper for reasoning why to use religiosity as attribute: "Belief in the paranormal: A review of the empirical literature" by Harvey J. Irwin.
• Public to use
• Contains attributes: State,Very important,Somewhat important,Not too important,Not at all important,Don't know,Sample size
• For color-mapping this data to US regions on the map, we could e.g. display the attribute "Very important" or the attributes "very important" and "somewhat important"added up. We could also let the user decide which of the attributes whithin religiosity to display.

Changes:

• <1% changed to 0
• 77% changed to 0.77
• state names changed to state abbreviations

Dataset "us_airports": Link to data source

• For public use
• 22216 rows/datapoints
• Pay attention that for longitude: we have -178 and 179 in Alaska because we use negative coord if they are above 180 degrees

Changes:

• Only kept columns name, type, latitude_deg, longitude_deg, state
• Column state was derived from column iso_region
• Type gives us the kind of airport (e.g. balloonport, large_airports …) -> maybe we can filter out later
• Change all , to / in name
• Deleted all U-A state abbrevs
• Deleted some duplicate rows
• Delete rows where the lat or long coordinate where obviously outside of US territory, e.g. 0

Dataset "population_density_by_us_state.csv": Link to data source

• Includes time dimension with steps of decades: 1910, 1920, ... 2020
• For public use
• Population density is a measure of the average population per square mile of land
• Puerto Rico is in dataset! -> We don't included Puerto Rico so far, maybe ignore it?
• United States as a whole is an additional separate datapoint

Changes:

• Deleted all "regions" datapoints (e.g. midwest)
• Only kept columns "state" and "population density"
• Removed the , for the thousand block
• Attribute/column name: "name" to "state"
• state names changed to state abbreviations
• Maybe TODO: map square miles to square kilometers???
