water temp: ask modelers if we can zoom in more/further #685

Is there a good reason we cannot zoom in further on the map view?

I think they were most interested in trying to add layers that might provide context like large rivers with names labeled. Steve thought GF did have stream names, but we discussed a layer like the TX 1:1 million scale rivers that could be an optional background layer that can be visible when zoomed in farther. I think that is what is in https://txpub.usgs.gov/DSS/streamer/web/

They were also interested in potentially showing the locations of reservoirs and lakes for context as a separate layer.

What do you think @mwernimont and @mhines-usgs ?

My personal opinion: there isn't any technical reason we can't add more layers to the map, but I would pose the question if adding these other layers addresses the original problem/request that our reviewers were requesting, which seemed to center on wanting to zoom in to the segments and get more details about the water temperature.

direct feedback copied and pasted here as a refresher:

Visually pleasing and simple to use – would like a few more bells and whistles – as it is not much more than a daily static map.  Would like to be able to look at different days - in perhaps a historical context   or look at departures from averages for a given day

It seems simple enough, but there isn't really anything to draw me in.  Maybe allow the user to switch seasons, load a different date or create an animation for the seasons.  Also, I would at a minimum mark a value at the midpoint on the gradient legend.  With only a high and low value it's hard to determine the gray area temperatures where the change from blue to red occurs.  I'd also consider letting the user click on the map to get a specific stream temp.  That would help them play around to get better access to the data.

Not enough variation in color to really be able to tell -  There is variation in colors Nationally but regionally – difficult to see much difference – even when zoomed in.  However when I zoom into Wisconsin, it almost seems that upstream segments are lighter blue than downstream segments being darker blue meaning upstream segments  are warmer than downstream segments – I would’ve thought that some of those large river downstream segments would be warmer but maybe because they are larger bodies of water during this season, they are a bit colder

Most – pretty simple to use Least – not enough information -  would like to be able to drill down and get more information about individual streams

They liked the zoom level today. Dec 2.
