Some ideas:

More samples! Ideally all the way to 20,000 Hz
Only look at the top x samples (in terms of amplitude) - would make it a lot quicker!
Do something to make the scaling work no matter the sound. One idea is to define that the highest amplitude in a run = 0.5 (out of 1) on a colour component?

Status:

Top x samples is implemented (and easily configurable through app.config)
Have also put the per-sample logging on a separate thread for (hopefully) increased performance

Left to do:

Add better automatic scaling
[NEW] Change the colour spectrum being used from triangles to a normal distribution
Moar samples!

Status:

Now uses a Normal CDF to work out values for RGB; triangles are still there to give a choice (plan is to make it properly configurable)

Left to do:

Make choice of Normal vs. triangle configurable
[NEW] Make all the magic numbers (which define range of effect for the normal \ triangles) configurable too
Investigate auto-scaling (need to confirm it's actually a good idea as it might make us lose some flexibility...)

Status:

Magic numbers are now configurable via app.config!
The whole mechanism has been cleaned up too.

The effect is a lot better now. It feels more reactive and, even better, the range of listening is now all the way up to 10KHz (was 1KHz), making it a lot more accurate!

I've decided against auto-scaling for now (doesn't feel worth it atm), which means this is now done!
