Broader/narrower/related terms should link to respective authority records #101

Some of the authority pages have links to other authority records in the "broader terms", "narrower terms" and "related terms" fields, but these are displayed just as plain text. I would think there is no reason these aren't actually hyperlinked to the authority records they refer to.

@WaxCylinderRevival: Do you know of any other types of links like these?

Examples:

Sara notes we should get DAS to export the full authority lists at some point, too. Only(?) the organization list currently is exported in full, and the other lists are exported in part, according to whether each record is associated with a description.

WaxCylinderRevival commented 9 years ago

Absolutely to all points.

We do want people to be able to move between narrower and broader terms and related terms.

YES to exporting all authority lists. This is actually a critical need for the SNAC project because we create personal names that are connected to record descriptions that sometimes take months or even years to get through the review process.

I have some other lists off the top of my head, but I'm going to take this issue to Jerry so we can provide you a more comprehensive response.

So, from the catalog side, I think we should immediately be linking to all records which can be linked to anywhere they are just plain text. For records like those above, you can use the API to find out the NAIDs of the narrow/broad/related terms and use those NAIDs to get to their URL. So those are web pages that already exist, and just need links.

Other authority term lists, like program area, reference unit, etc. aren't exported to begin with, so that needs to be solved on the DAS side first, before anything can be done in the catalog.

Apparently, in the ARC era, some of these authority lists were proprietary Getty lists that NARA wasn't allowed to display as records, and that's why they weren't linked unless they were used in a description.

Luckily, we've moved from Getty to LC terms, which are open.
