So I think the problem with having the keyword/or text inputs appear as a filter breadcrumb (like the other refinements) is that if you had just one search term and then removed that search term, we wouldn't want the system to overload trying to bring back everything with those parameters (without search terms). If I'm remembering correctly Search Tech brought this up as a problem, but we didn't get it fully worked out. I think this could be mitigated so that if there were no search terms in the breadcrumb, you'd get no results.
If we implement the breadcrumbs for the search terms - then I'm imagining we'd want those synced to what is in the search box. So, you could remove terms from either the breadcrumb refinements or from the search box - they'd stay in sync.
The system already handles a search of all records (i.e. the ":*:" search term), so I don't think it would get overloaded. Agreed on your second paragraph.
Keywords and other text inputs should appear as a filter breadcrumb at the top of the brief results page, so that they can be easily removed at will without affecting the other filters applied. This was discussed in R1 but we were not able to get it in the design.
