From a user perspective, the tagging of digital objects versus items renders confusion, particularly but not limited to when an item-level descriptive record has only one associated digital object. Staff and users --myself included -- have tagged objects and expected these tags to appear on the descriptive record. There are also times when people tag a digitized page, thinking the term will carry throughout the record.
There are several ways to proceed, and the way forward would benefit from group discussion.
Adjust presentation
Better labels/explanation in the tagging areas (especially item/folder-level description and tag this page)
Adjust functionality
Tagging terms in the digital objects lifts up to the parent descriptive record (item or folder)
Or, the parent descriptive record could have two clearly distinguished cluster of tags: 1) a place for user-entered terms that apply to the series and 2) terms automatically populated by the tags left on the digital objects.
It could be interesting to let people click on the tag in area 2 and be brought to the child digital objects that have that tag.
