Fix several long standing issues

Hi, here are several changes that I have accumulated during the last few years, waiting for github repository.

I agree to release them in public domain or to license them with any license of your choice that will let people use/modify/distribute them in any form and for any purpose, as long as I will not be deemed responsible for any damage derived by the use of these changes.

Let me know if you need any further explanation/justification for my changes or any modification to them.

Unfortunately, no. Things at work had to take precedence but I think I’ll get to this in the next week or so.
