I dislike the word 'safe'. Makes it sound like a judgmental place ridden with politics - which is not what we are. Maybe 'newcomer-friendly'?
Otherwise, I think this is great.
Should we also include something about our goals to meet monthly or do a few beginner talks toward the beginning of each year? Or are those too specific for charter?
TBH, I'm not exactly sure what a charter is. I assume it's public facing and something we put on the website that lets us internally and others externally know our goals?
@coolaj86: I think your question will be addressed if you examine the checklist in the PR OP?
We (@CleanCut, @todpunk, @darryldspencer, @pinealservo, and I) did discuss in the planning meeting the sorts of specific things we'd like to do to address this charter, and where our current activities fit in or may need to be changed. First order of business is getting consensus on direction (the first checkbox) -- then we can focus on specific ways to implement it (second checkbox).

I don't think "newcomer-friendly" would be controversial -- thoughts, @CleanCut, @darryldspencer, @todpunk, @pinealservo? Just to spitball, perhaps "inclusive" might be another option?
Feel free to just leave a thumbs-up if you just want to go with @coolaj86's suggestion. :)
I think "inclusive" is the best suggestion so far. It both conveys the intent well and incorporates the other options.
I agree with Nathan.

s/safe/inclusive. Thoughts, @coolaj86?
Both are overloaded politically and I can agree with the desire to be specific in intent. "Inclusive" is better, but some other options for suggestion:
Lots of tradeoffs there. I like supportive most, as that's the goal of any mentoring I do or any community activity I engage in. It also frames any discussion of conflict as easily bound in the question of "does this conflict lean towards growth?" rather than avoiding conflict altogether. I want to be challenged by my friends in healthy ways, especially in my technical learning.
Friendly is also really good for utah, though couches conflict differently.
That said, all of this is diving deep where we probably don't need to care too much as long as we're all on the same page as far as wanting to help each other and the community.
@todpunk: Makes sense to me. I'm persuaded.
To Tod's point, though, I think that's enough rounds of bikeshedding. If we feel that the word "supportive" is, for some reason, misaligned or insufficient, then we can change that down the road. For now, let's get this initial charter closed out.

@ErichDonGubler, Re: @todpunk: 'nuff said.
In accordance with our 2021 Q2 planning meeting, I'd like to propose that Utah Rust adopt a charter codifying the purpose and direction of Utah Rust and its activities. The content of the charter is as follows:
The Utah Rust Charter
We, as Utah Rust, want to enable the community to dive into the exciting breadth and depth of development in Rust by:
