@GordonDunsire @AdamSchiff Practice here seems to be a mess entity-wise. Relationship between 535 and 533 is complex. Is there a way for us to reliably determine which entities this data refers to, in relation to 533 and when 533 is not present? Can we relate those entities to one another in a more specific way than "related manifestation"? Is there a reliable way to determine whether a record with a 533 is a reproduction or an original?

533 Issue

GordonDunsire commented 11 months ago

The entity that is the focus of 535 is Place. Subfield $a "Custodian" reflects a typical conflation of collection-level entities. This arises because a title of a collection is also often the title of the custodian agent and the title of the place where it is located. In this case, it is clear that subfield $a is "The Library" as title of place, not agent.

535 is a shortcut relationship between the manifestation described by the MARC record and the location of an item that is reproduced by the manifestation.

ManifestationDescribed 535 PlaceOriginal . // "has location of original"

In RDA:

ManifestationReproduction rdam:P30303 ItemOriginal . // "is reproduction of item of" ItemOriginal rdai:P40162 PlaceOriginal . // "has location of item"

Alternatively in RDA:

ManifestationReproduction rdam:P30303 ItemOriginal . // "is reproduction of item of" ItemOriginal rdai:P40161 ManifestationCollection . // "is holding of" ManifestationCollection rdam:P30461 PlaceOriginal . // "has location of collection"

The focus of 534 is the item that is reproduced by the manifestation described.

ManifestationReproduction 534 ItemOriginal . // "has original version"

In RDA:

ManifestationReproduction rdam:P30303 ItemOriginal . // "is reproduction of item of"

The focus of 533 is the manifestation that reproduces the original manifestation being described ("item" in the MARC 21 manual refers to the manifestation described by the record).

ManifestationOriginal 533 ManifestationReproduction. // "has reproduction note"

In RDA: ManifestationOriginal rdam:P30039 ManifestationReproduction. // "is reproduced as manifestation"

If the MARC 21 record has 535 and 533:

ManifestationReproduction rdam:P30303 ItemOriginal . // "is reproduction of item of" ItemOriginal rdai:P40162 PlaceOriginal . // "has location of item" ManifestationReproduction rdam:P30043 ManifestationOriginal. // "is reproduction of manifestation of" (inverse) => ManifestationOriginal rdam:P30103 ItemOriginal . // "has exemplar of manifestation"

If the MARC record has only 535 with no 533, nothing is said about the original manifestation. If ItemOriginal is minted, it requires the minting of its ManifestationOriginal to be well-formed, and ManifestationOriginal will require the minting of at least one ExpressionOriginal or WorkOriginal to be well-formed. These will be minimal-conformant instances, consisting only of an IRI and an identifier that stringifies the IRI.

If there is a 533, its subfields provide additional statements about ManifestationOriginal that may also flesh-out ExpressionOriginal or WorkOriginal (or these may be derived from ManifestationReproduction).

Just want to respond to the 533 part of @GordonDunsire's notes.

It's important to be clear that by definition, 533 subfields describe the (item / "thing" / manifestation) that the MARC record is for/about. That thing is a reproduction, but the institutional choice is to follow a practice to give data for the original in some of the MARC descriptive fields (the "main body of the record"), particularly the 260/264 and, in cases where it might differ, also the 245, as well as other fields. We will need to tackle this in the 533 mapping. In the end, we should end up with two manifestation descriptions, one for the reproduction and one for the original - the only tricky part will be establishing correct relation to items if we need to do that, so that it's clear that the original is a related manifestation to the reproduction whose MARC record is being converted.

533 is only used if the item is a reproduction.

Definition:

Descriptive data for a reproduction of an original item when the main portion of the bibliographic record describes the original item and the data differ.
