TAG 008 has [OBSOLETE] characterPositionLabels. What to do with? Should it be mapped or ignored? @CECSpecialistI @AdamSchiff
Certain MARC TAGS can be mapped to more than one RDA properties. How should we record this in the mapping?
It depends on the MARC TAG and properties in question, I think. Some may merit two or more mappings, and in that case, they can go on separate spreadsheet rows. Otherwise, we need to choose the best property and map to that one. Does that answer your question @SitaKB , or were you getting at something else? Sorry I missed this until now, we could have talked about it at the meeting.
I noticed that sometimes the character position number is missing or wrong. For example 008- Biography has character positon empty and 39. According to https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd008b.html it should be 34. @CECSpecialistI @AdamSchiff

Don't know. 007 file alsohad unknown character position like 4435 but the new file has the right number. All the 44XX are now gone from 007.

Is it safe to map b - Bibliographies, k - Discographies, q - Filmographies to rdaw:P10004 has category of work? You can use these three for either an entire work or "part" of the work (not really a part because it's actually an aggregate), as shown in this example from the MARC manual:
008/24-27 bkq# 504 ## $a Bibliography: p. 80-84. 504 ## $a Discography: p. 85-97. 504 ## $a Filmography: p. 98-101.
In this case, they may be mapped to rdam:P30455 has supplementary content.
@pan-zhuo: I do not think it is safe to assume that a single b, k, or q code in 008/24-27 indicates that only one work is embodied in the manifestation being described, or that the code represents a category of work. A single code may be assigned even if the manifestation is an aggregate that embodies more than one work. That is not the problem, because all three of these categories are now treated in RDA as aggregating works (aggregations of metadata description sets for each work that is catalogued).
The problem is to which minted work the category is assigned. RDA does not accommodate "aggregations of aggregations", so a manifestation that embodies, say, a discography of 10 works supplemented by a preface and and an essay about the composer is an aggregate of 10+2 metadata expression/works (+ the aggregating work that is not a discography) while the discography on its own is an aggregate of 10 metadata expression/works (+ a different aggregating work that is a discography).
Mapping to "has supplementary content" is fine, but we should document the implications:
The other codes that should only apply to the 'whole' manifestation can be mapped to rdaw:P10004 "has category of work" for the instance of work that is the object of rdam:P3013 "has work manifested". In this case, the MARC 21 value vocabulary is intended for work categories.
Some ideas on mapping CNR: 008/22 - Form of original item:
Use a structured description of Work:carrier version of or Work:transformation by audience of, with a boilerplate "{title from 245} ({code label of 008/22})".
For codes a - Microfilm, b - Microfiche, c - Microopaque, o - Online, q - Direct electronic, s - Electronic, map to Work:carrier version of.
For codes d - Large print, e - Newspaper format, f - Braille, map to Work:transformation by audience of.

We ran into a question while we were reviewing the 008 mapping today. Here's a link to the place in the notes, for context.
We want to know whether MARC MUSIC 008 /30-31 "Literary text for sound recordings" refers to supplementary material in an augmentation aggregate or the "main work" described in a MARC record, or potentially both. MARC describes the positions as follows:
"Up to two one-character codes (recorded in the order of the following list) that indicate the type of literary text contained in a nonmusical sound recording. If only one code is assigned, it is left justified and the unused position contains a blank (#). If more than two codes for types of literary text are appropriate to an item, only the two most important are recorded."
We had a hard time coming up with examples of when code "s" for "sound" would be appropriate here. Maybe for non-word text or indications of the type of sound to be used? If this code is appropriate, would it be at the work or expression level?

Remember this is for spoken word, so this is just coding what kind of thing is being spoken. It's it poetry? Is it conference proceedings? It defines the work but it's used on an expression bib.

Ah, so then "sound" would be spoken non-word sounds? That makes a bit more sense. So we can map these to "has category of work"?
Hi Crystal,
I would say that whether MARC MUSIC 008 /30-31 "Literary text for sound recordings" refers to the genre of the content of the words that are being spoken.
A blank (#) means that the recording either includes no words (just music) or the words are sung rather than spoken (i.e., the recording is musical).
Code ‘s’ means that the recording is of sounds without words. I have attached a file of examples from the copy of LC records that I have. Note that in some cases another code is provided, e.g., ‘i' for Instruction.
So, the MUSIC 008 /30-31 codes do not necessarily indicate aggregates, although the manifestation might be an aggregate that embodies different expressions.
However, the code ‘s’ (sounds) raises the question about whether the recorded sounds are expressions. Unless those sounds (utterance and vocalizations) are made by humans, I don’t think the sounds themselves are.
In which case, the work is the act of recording the sounds (similar to the act of taking a photograph) and its creator is a recordist agent (An agent who contributes to an expression by using a recording device to capture sound or video during a recording session. Includes field recordings of natural sounds, music performances, and other events).
Each recording is separate, so each must be a separate expression/work. If there is only one recording event (similar to when there is only one photo, or drawing), then it is a single-part expression/work. If the manifestation embodies multiple separate recordings, we are back to the manifestation embodying multiple expressions.
Looking at the examples in the attached file, I would say that most of those MARC records are for aggregate manifestations, even when there is no indication of supplementary content. But every now and then there is a record for a single recording, e.g., 010 $a 93850695 (https://soundcloud.com/user-651349945/playhouse-on-the-beach-female-voice/recommended)
So, what do we do?
I’m working on sending what I have been working on for pulling out manifestations of diachronic works and should have something to send soon. Then I’ll move on to identifying aggregate manifestations.

"sounds" is an RDA content type based on the RDA/ONIX Framework. The RDA definition and scope note is "A content type that consists of content other than language or music, expressed in an audible form. Natural sounds, artificially produced sounds, etc., are included".
"spoken word" is the content type for "language" sounds; "performed music" is the content type for "music" sounds. They all share the ROF sensory mode of "hearing", and together they exhaust the possibilities.
Like all works and expressions, "sounds" must have a creator agent; the act of creation includes the choice of recording equipment, choice of recording place, subsequent processing of the recorded signal, editing and choice of start and finish cut-offs, etc.
All content embodied in a manifestation must be considered to be one or more expressions; there is no content that is not an expression (what would it otherwise be, some kind of carrier?). Ambient sounds that happen to be captured when, say, recording someone talking in a street or the Grand Canyon, should be treated as noise (in the general signal-processing sense). It is not content unless the cataloguer knows that there has been creative input. This is the same as for capturing images, for example in a photograph, where the graininess of the image is usually unintentional.
As far as I can see, Deborah's MARC 21 examples all indicate an act of creation or intention.
The presence of a "sounds" expression in a manifestation does not necessarily indicate an aggregate. There are many examples of a single sounds expression published in a manifestation, such as in sample libraries for the composition of ambient music. "Birdsong sample" might well be a short (edited) piece that is intended for mixing or looping in a music performance or recording. See, for example, the British Library's collection of Wildlife and environmental sounds.
Hi @CatalogerCate , we came up with another question for you while working on the 008 mapping for music. If a duration is recorded as "unknown", is that useful information to map and retain? We haven't generally been making statements when a value is not known, but wanted to check in with you to see whether we ought to make an exception here. Would you retain and map this information to RDA? @AdamSchiff @GordonDunsire

Hi @CECSpecialistI . In course of working on the special mappings for records with 533 tags, I came across some questions about 008 mappings (am almost done with that part). Here they are:
Why do we even have a line ("not mapped") for an obsolete value of 008 position 6 value of "c"? When we have another mapping for "c", the mapping Continuing resource currently published" should be applied, unless (condition?) If an old record had "actual date and copyright date" intended, would the value of Date 2 (positions 11-14) being something other than 9999 be a condition?
First and second lines of 008 position 7-10 and 11-14 with position 6 value "d". Why are there separate mappings for first and last date of a diachronic continuing resource that ceased publication? Should we set up conditions and follow PCC policy statements in Date of Manifestation RDA Section so that if there is a date range, the structure is date1 - date2 in a single date of manifestation structured statement?
Third line for 008 position 7-10 and 11-14 with position 6 value "d" - the logic by which a note on manifestation "value = "Ceased publication. Publication start and end dates unknown." is created isn't clear. There's an asterisk in an unlabeled condition column. Is something missing?

@CECSpecialistI @SitaKB @cspayne 61 of the lines in 008 mapping reference URLs at site marc21rdf.info . I followed one and got a dnserrorassist.att.net error message that the site did not exist or was not available. Examples : 008 lines 233 and 234.
Lines 224-233 are other Government Publication code "Has category of manifestation" mappings to IRIs which are not specified in the Transformation Notes, maybe the intention was to map them using marc21rdf.info site IRIs (or IRIs from some other source?) but they didn't get filled in. Just wanted to alert you.
Apparently this domain housed an early attempt to serialize MARC as linked data by OCLC research as mentioned in this blog post from Jeff Mixter and Jeff Young: https://hangingtogether.org/how-marc-can-sparql/ . Probably OCLC has stopped supporting it. They have been dropping things lately (e.g., the VIAF supplementary "links" data which contained the wikidata links, which is upsetting some people)..
By the way, the URLs begin with http, e.g. http://marc21rdf.info/terms/commonfor%23r . They aren't all for Government Publications either - some are used for Form of Item, some MAPS properties, etc. id.loc.gov now has a vocabulary for Goverment Publication Type but not sure about the others.

Do we have plans to replace all of the vocabularies currently in the transformation notes in 008? For example, I'm looking at 008 BOOKS 18-21 and some of the values are currently mapped to RDA vocabulary terms, but we have minted IRIs for each of these values as part of UW libraries' semantic web data. Will these be used instead, or are they only used when there is not an RDA vocabulary equivalent?
My understanding (and clarification from Crystal a couple days ago) is to replace everything with our own except for the RDA vocabulary terms, though I am not sure about any future plans.
I agree. We discussed this and concluded that we would not, in general, 'fix' the data from LC codes to RDA codes unless they were invalid. So we take what is in the M21 record and assign the appropriate IRI (from UW or RDA Registry). With a few known exceptions, noted in the Registry mappings and our own mappings, there is a one-to-one correspondence between the LC and RDA/UW IRIs, so they can comfortably interoperate in semantic linked data applications.

Why are there two mappings to [http://rdaregistry.info/Elements/m/P30278] "has date of manifestation" - shouldn't this be a date range? (it's not narrowed to the "date1" or "date2" mapping... the transformation notes are "/[date] | u=blank" and "[date]/ | u=blank" so it looks like maybe you intended to map the begin and end dates of the range as separate properties? Don't understand syntax nor meaning of asterisk in condition column. Don't see any condition for the third mapping to note on manifestation "Dates of collection unknown.".

If position 6 has value "p" (Date of distribution/release/issue and production/recording session when different), shouldn't the two dates be mapped separately? As "Date of production" and "Date of publication" (or Date of distribution...?) This does not appear in the mapping; only the first date is mapped.
For position 6 value "r" (reprint/reissue date and original date), this is a multiple date but I am taking it that these dates describe the "original" that was reproduced by the thing described by the record (if there's a 533 present) -- if that was itself a reproduction. It appears we only map the first date and I can understand. Hopefully there would be a note describing the reprint's "original date". The first line lacks a transform note.
For position 6 value "t" (Publication date and copyright date), only the first date is mapped. I'm just wondering why no attempt to map 11-13 to manifestation Copyright Date [http://rdaregistry.info/Elements/m/P30007] was made. It looks like it is mapped to a note on manifestation though.
For position 6 value "u" (Continuing resource status unknown), there's a line mapping positions 11-14 that is marked "delete". This is puzzling, with the justification for mapping (or in this case not mapping) being "Included in conditions for Date 1, Date 2". But the "u" mapping is only for Date1. Shouldn't that mapping be consistent with the mapping for pos. 6 "c" and "d"?

@cspayne to best of my knowledge these haven't been answered. I hope the questions are clear - I've pretty much forgotten about it and I'm not the person to answer. Some may be my ignorance of the condition logic of asterisk. Maybe you and your team can figure them out, or present them at a project meeting?
"The mappings on lines 924 (MUSIC) and 753 (MIXED MATERIALS) are the only 2 Form of Item “I” codes for Multimedia [OBSOLETE] that map to expression property https://rdaregistry.info/Elements/e/#P20001 “has content type”. Line 753 (MIXED MATERIALS) also maps Form of item “I” to http://rdaregistry.info/Elements/m/P30002 “has media type”. Line 428 (CONTINUING RESOURCES) and Line 184 (BOOKS) map Form of Item “I” to http://rdaregistry.info/Elements/m/P30001 “has carrier type.” Should they all map to manifestation for consistency?"

My understanding (and clarification from Crystal a couple days ago) is to replace everything with our own except for the RDA vocabulary terms, though I am not sure about any future plans.
I agree. We discussed this and concluded that we would not, in general, 'fix' the data from LC codes to RDA codes unless they were invalid. So we take what is in the M21 record and assign the appropriate IRI (from UW or RDA Registry). With a few known exceptions, noted in the Registry mappings and our own mappings, there is a one-to-one correspondence between the LC and RDA/UW IRIs, so they can comfortably interoperate in semantic linked data applications.
Sounds good! I'm seeing 'reviewed' rows that map to an IRI but do not have any value to use in the transformation notes. Are these just yet to be filled in? Can I assume they map to the matching vocabulary IRIs that we have created?

- Row 490 - Was CONT 008/25-27 = x ever used? There is a mapping for it (obsolete) but I could not find this in the "Content Designator History" section of the MARC documentation
For BK (language material), positions 25-27 are not obsolete; 008/24-27 (4 positions) are used for Nature of contents.
For CR (continuing resources, positions 25-27 are used for Nature of contents

- Row 695 – The mapping for 008/31 = 1 "Index present" maps to “has supplementary content” here. For BOOKS (Row 243) it maps to a note on manifestation. Is this purposeful or should we be consistent?
You are correct, we should be consistent--any Index coding in the 008 or 006 should map to "has supplementary content".
The following should also map to "has supplementary content" wherever found:
For BOOKS when form of item = z "Other form of reproduction [OBSOLETE]", it is mapped to "has carrier type", but for MIXED MATERIALS and MUSIC it maps to "has category of manifestation". Is this purposeful or should they all map to "has category of manifestation" for consistency? Sita checked: was purposeful done. In cases where other has a meaning it was mapped to carrier type.
VISUAL MATERIALS 008/23-27 "Accompanying matter [OBSOLETE]" is mapped, but we do not have a vocabulary for these terms. Do we need to mint these? Or are we using string values? ANSWERED: We decided to not map these values in M2R meeting Oct 2, 2024
COMPUTER FILES and VISUAL MATERIALS 008/22 "target audience" map to both "intended audience of expression" and "intended audience of manifestation". On Dec 7, 2022 the meeting notes indicate that we are favoring "intended audience of expression" and all of the "intended audience of manifestation" mappings should be marked delete. I will mark these as delete and remove them from the transformation unless this was purposefully kept for these specific formats.

However, because this character position is obsolete, this means that every record after 1997, when this was marked obsolete, will have this value. lol, oops. Yeah we should ignore these instead of recording the "prime meridian not specified" note. Nice catch @cspayne
@lake44me @dchen077 I noticed that for "form of item" = r "regular print reproduction", the mapping is applied to the reproduction manifestation when there is a reproduction condition and not to the original manifestation. Mixed materials and music have obsolete values for "other form of reproduction" which are mapped to category of manifestation. Should these also map to the reproduction manifestation? Or are they mapped to the original?
@lake44me @dchen077 Also, some of the VISUAL MATERIALS 008/33 "type of visual material" rows have "check for reproduction conditions" in the conditions, but no transformation note indicating these should be applied to the original manifestation. Are these mapped to the reproduction or original manifestation?
