Although the LCD gives some info on internal status, it would be nice to be able to check the orange and blue LEDs without having to dismantle the robot. This could be done by using fiber optic cable, or plastic with the same properties, without any wiring changes. As a fallback, these LEDs are on GPIO pins, and it may be possible to wire a second LED to them.
