The link that you shared in the ReadMe.md doesn't have the same folder structure that you described. All I could download were some .mdb files. Did you have to do any post-processing to these files to extract images?

It seems the dataset format is modified by the owner of the google drive link provided in the Readme. Use this to get mnist-m dataset: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B_tExHiYS-0vR2dNZEU4NGlSSW8
