Weather not working after lastest Windows and ExplorerPatcher update. #3674

Open cjahn50 opened 2 months ago

cjahn50 commented 2 months ago

I just updated both Windows 11 and ExplorerPatcher.

Windows 11 - OS build 22631.4169 ExplorerPatcher - Version 22621.3880.66.5

The Weather Widget when clicked immediately closes and complains that I'm not connected to the internet.

Any ideas as to how to fix this?

Jazzzed commented 2 months ago

This was happening today for me too, but my computer had not updated Windows. I went into Explorer Patcher’s settings under “Weather”, and clicked the “Clear weather widget local data” link. That worked for me. I’m still on EP version 22621.3527.65.5 though.

cjahn50 commented 2 months ago

Thanks!!! That worked! I’ll mention it on the website.

Best regards,

Carl

I had to reboot before clicking on the “Clear weather widget local data” link was able to fix it. This happened to me on 2 completely different laptops both of which are on Windows 11 build 22631.4169 with EP 22621.3880.66.5 and using the Windows 10 taskbar option. I am not using any 3rd party AV, and the following paths are on my list of exclusions in Windows Security (Defender) :

Same problem here. In the taskbar there is an icon of a newspaper instead of the brief weather info. When I click on it, the pop up window opens but shows "Unable to read weather information, make sure that the location you have entered is correct. Verify that you are connected to the internet. Reload" When I click on reload, the weather info appear for a brief moment with the current weather information but in less than a second it disappears and the same error message appears again. I tried the "Clear weather widget local data" and "Restart file explorer" but no way. After clearing the data, the info that appears for a brief moment when I click on reload is the weather info covered by a popup asking for cookies (this is normal since I cleared the local data) and then disappears and appears the error message again. It seems the widget doesn't even have time to autoclick on the allow cookies button since it keeps appearing every time I click on Reload.

Version data same as OP: ExplorerPatcher version 22621.3880.66.5 Running on Windows 11, OS Build 22631.4169.

Same here. FIxed for me.

The problem happens because of the antivirus app that catches the essential libraries of the weather, such as file: C:\Program Files\ExplorerPatcher\ep_weather_host_stub.dll or ExplorerPatcher in general. in my case this happened yesterday to me by Windows Security on Windows 1123H2 Build 22631.4169

even though I set the "Action" to "Allow on device" or "Restore", but it didn't work, downloading ExplorerPatcher again would do the same cycle, so I'm waiting for a solution in the next ExplorerPatcher update.

read the release notes here so you know what files and directories to exclude with windows defender or whatever AV you use: https://github.com/valinet/ExplorerPatcher/releases

I didn't need to do this, just clearing and restarting via the settings menu worked for me.

Wonder if there's multiple reasons it is happening.

I'm on: Version

Update to 66.6 of EP to fix an issue where it can't update if the url set to update is blank in the registry.

It should look like this

pyrates999 commented 1 week ago

It never changes when I try clicking on the X, nor does it change if I try clicking anywhere in Show Weather on the taskbar.

I have installed the WebView2 Runtime as when I try to install it, it says it is already installed.

image

I have deleted and recreated the directory: %APPDATA%\ExplorerPatcher\ep_weather_host. Restarted file explorer.

I opened up the registry and went to Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\People. PeopleBand of type DWORD was already set to 0. Restarted file explorer.

In the registry, I also went to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\ExplorerPatcher, And added WeatherDevMode of type DWORD, and set it to 1. Restarted file explorer.

I've closed the EP Properties application and reopened it.

Here is the EP console output:

Nothing is output when I try to click on the X, nor is there any output when I try clicking anywhere in Show Weather on the taskbar.

I even tried Restore default settings in Settings and uninstall. And weather still doesn't work when I try to click on it, which caused me to lose the Properties selection when I right clicked on the taskbar. I'll file that as a new issue here.

Jazzzed commented 1 week ago

On my working Windows 11 installation, I show a PeopleBand value of 1 (0x00000001) at \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\People

And at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\ExplorerPatcher I don't see a WeatherDevMode key, but rather all this:

I'm having the same issue. I click the Reload link, the weather app screen shows briefly and returns to a blank window with the information below. I've tried a lot of things prior to realizing that the issue might be Explorer Patcher then found this thread. I'm running version 22621.4317.67.7 on Win 11.

Unable to load weather information Make sure that the location you have entered is correct. Verify that you are connected to the Internet.

This was happening to me. Uninstalled and reinstalled EP, cleared the weather data, nothing working, just the newspaper icon. Saw a comment here to reboot then clear the widget data- this worked. No idea what changes on restart. We're using 3rd party AV SentinelOne (which is not blocking/alerting on anything).

@packetdog Thank you. Your suggestion worked for me. Export Settings>Uninstall>Restart>Install>Import Settings>Update weather now. However, after 1 restart following the reinstall, I did have to click on the weather widget and click Reload to get it to show the weather. FYI, I am using the paid version of ESET NOD32 AV which does not appear to be blocking anything with Explorer Patcher.

Edit: I just started up my laptop again and the weather widget loaded properly without me having to do anything. All is good.

  1. Clear weather widget local data
  2. Reboot
  3. Clear weather widget local data again
  4. If it still shows the newspaper icon, then click on it, and click on Reload.

Uninstalling/reinstalling EP should not be needed.

Also, as long as all the necessary file/folder exclusions (see below) have been added properly in the AV, disabling the AV should not be needed. Substitute _%UserProfile%\Downloads\epsetup.exe with the filepath of where you plan to download the file _epsetup.exe
