Ability to set one's own work rate #417

Open fosterlynn opened 9 years ago

fosterlynn commented 9 years ago

From Tammy, log in on my mobile or computer and:

The ability to set my work pay rate and fluid equity rate according to my needs and in relation to other affiliates

(Right now, this is done either on the type of work or the value equation.)

This is a very important feature. This is one reason why we are not using the NRP-based value equation for the Sensor Network project.

see project page http://www.sensorica.co/home/what-we-do/projects/sensor-network-project

see spreadsheet-based value equation https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ezjVX4-tWY8ptOIyjGzpw_0xGqNgCW3aH5q-7nxLHrw/edit#gid=162995459

If we use a NRP-based Value Equation we would need to assign values for Types of work. Otherwise, the value equation needs to filter by Types of work and include all possible Type of work. If someone adds a new type of work to a process in the project the value equation needs to be updated, therefore the value Equation cannot dynamically adjust. Here's an example http://nrp.sensorica.co/accounting/edit-value-equation/16/ But this is incompatible with SENSORICA's model, which considers projects as autonomous ventures, assigning their own metrics to contributions. Different groups don't weigh types of work the same way. The Sensor Network project is very meritocratic and pay oriented, requires a special types of skills and that draws in a special type of people. We don't want to impose our way of weighing work contributions to the entire community, because that would diminish the attractiveness of SENSORICA to people that have other inclinations.

Tibi, I hope you are aware that every project can have different rates for the same type of work using value equations. What you wrote here makes it seem like that is impossible:

Different groups don't weigh types of work the same way.

And this next sentence is asking for a different feature, which would be better in its own issue, because doing what Tammy requested would not fix it:

If someone adds a new type of work to a process in the project the value equation needs to be updated, therefore the value Equation cannot dynamically adjust.

I mean, yeah, then somebody would need to add it to the value equation, too. Takes like 5 minutes tops. To dynamically adjust, the value equation could would need to assign a rate for it, too, which I don't think is doable reliably.

What Tammy was asking for is something different: for each individual to set their own pay rate. That ability is built into the NRP data model, but we have not turned it on in the UI because nobody had asked for it until that issue, and I don't think Tammy is actually using NRP, so the request is hypothetical.
