How would you like ValueFlows to be cited? #115

Closed bhaugen closed 4 years ago

bhaugen commented 6 years ago

...because it is starting to happen. See https://github.com/valueflows/valueflows/issues/269#issuecomment-395957283

The tendency is to pick out some individuals, often inaccurately as in that case, because they can't handle reality.

Since I know we have at least one contributor who is uncomfortable with ValueFlows being an organization, I suggested the ValueFlows unorganization. Good enough? Got better ideas?

ValueFlows project?

daniellestanko commented 6 years ago

Hi Bob and other ValueFlow participants. I am a coauthor of the paper mentioned in comment #269 I'd like to thank you for your work, and apologize for the inaccurate citation. The journal article where we published does not accept changes after publication, but we have ValueFlows cited in another, non-peer reviewed article that I will make sure to change when there has been enough agreement on how to cite it. To that end, please let me know how you would like it to be changed. I would suggest putting citation information on the group's work so that it can be cited in the best way when other people access it.

Wow! @daniellestanko thanks for responding here instead of email! No need to apologize, and we should agree on how we want to be cited.

I would suggest putting citation information on the group's work so that it can be cited in the best way when other people access it.

Could you suggest a form of citation, and where to put it?

[edit] P.S. is this the Titanic Kaggle Project?

daniellestanko commented 6 years ago

No problem. Everyone can see it here. We may not be as corporate-y as you thought!

Not sure about the Titanic kaggle reference, but the other paper I referenced and will make sure gets updated is [here].(https://docs.google.com/document/d/1vlOoXhHIS2hSNysH7eP44X3yP990F0zHMV_rSztQGZs)

Just as a start, on the site valueflo.ws, I would suggest adding a section on citations, and note what you would like to be used instead of author names, and give an example in a common format like APA. Most citations ask for author names, so this would help people plug into the standard citation format, which assumes a few people were contributing and that's it.

Thanks for the suggestions. And that paper is even more interesting than the first.

I see how you did this citation for Sensorica in the new paper, right after the ValueFlows citation. Sensorica is listed as the author, probably for similar reasons. I made suggestions for improvement on the document.

@daniellestanko thanks for making those changes.

For citations it can also be useful to attach a DOI to certain resources. For GitHub repositories, this is freely available via https://zenodo.org/
