Nice touch with the smart light! Tried this approach before as well, but both GCP and Azure API results were a bit of a letdown. Might try to revisit my washing machine reminder project...

You don't mention this explicitly, but Google Cloud seems to be non-free, with a 90-day free trial period. Have I overlooked something, have you just chosen to pay for this, or was this free when you wrote it, but has since then become non-free?

Just checked my GC billing. This project is still running and over the course of the entire lifespan of this specific project, I've currently payed 0.01 dollar in total (!). This includes running a google cloud function every day, calling the vision api, as well as uploading images to a bucket (which I subsequently delete after use).

So ... yes it's free :) You probably do need to add your credit card details when creating an account though.
