Variety not starting after libimagequant update #660

Version of Variety Issue exists in Variety 0.8.11-1 from Arch Linux extra repo and 0.8.11.r2.ge8580e9-1 from AUR

Describe the bug After an update to libimagequant 4.2.2-1, Variety no longer starts, with this error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/variety", line 64, in import variety # isort:skip ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ File "/usr/lib/python3.11/site-packages/variety/init.py", line 62, in from variety import VarietyWindow, ThumbsManager, ThumbsWindow File "/usr/lib/python3.11/site-packages/variety/VarietyWindow.py", line 32, in from PIL import Image as PILImage File "/usr/lib/python3.11/site-packages/PIL/Image.py", line 82, in from . import _imaging as core ImportError: libimagequant.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

It looks like libimagequant was just updated in the Arch linux repo, and this is the cause of the issue. Rolling back to libimagequant 4.2.1-1 resolves the issue and variety loads normally.

Ref: https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/libimagequant/ https://github.com/ImageOptim/libimagequant

Context Error occurs every time variety is loaded after updating libimagequant

To Reproduce

  1. Update libimagequant to 4.2.2-1
  2. Install Variety through paru/pacman (both methods attempted)
  3. Attempt to run variety
  4. Error occurs

Attach Variety's log file variety -v fails with error above variety will not create ~/.config/variety if it's purged after updating libimagequant

Just updated my system today, and I can confirm Variety is working now after updating libimagequant to version 4.2.2-2.
