I have encountered what I believe is the same problem, but after upgrading Linux Mint 20 to 21.3. Without the system tray icon (and "About" information), I used Synaptic Package Manager to confirm version 0.8.5-2 of Variety is installed, and the version of Cinnamon is 6.0.4 (GTK shows 3.24.33 in System Reports). Of course, missing the system tray icon prevents using the mouse controls to move back/forward in the desktop image, etc. Variety otherwise appears to function normally.

Update: Just upgraded to the latest version (0.8.12~git202401202237.8f6264a~ppa978~ubuntu22.04.1) by using the PPA, but that didn't seem to change anything. Uploading my log file in case it helps. Wondering if the root cause involves AyatanaAppIndicator3 somehow. Thought I don't understand it fully, there was a lot of discussion in the Blog over at Mint regarding Gnome support generally, and things like GTK, Adwaita and libAdwaita, etc. variety.log

Another update: After posting the above update about 5 minutes ago, the system tray icon just 'magically' appeared. (??!!??) To quote Johnny Bravo: Things just keep getting weirder and weirder....

Guess I'll continue to monitor and see if I can provide anything further that might help.
