Some other info specific to my issue:
April 30th was the last day I was able to auto sync and have been using this
since
Jan 15th without issue and no modification. I pretty much, set it and forget
it.

I have the same problem: actually not working and no credentials modification
made.
Using CyanogenMod-4.2.5.

I found a solution for me:
I used my Google Acc Login data, as well as my email adress there (@gmx). With
my
@gmail adress it works. Seems to make a difference regarding the IMAP
connection.

ElysiumSoR, can you elaborate a bit?... I get the same kind of login error
(suddently
asks me to check imap and username+password) and i'd love to try your solution
but I
don't understand what you've written about "Google Acc Login data" and several
different e-mail addresses. Thanks a lot! :)

I have this same issue. Getting a login error. Have tried multiple basic
changes
(changing email accounts, passwords, etc.), have checked gmail settings, have
reinstalled program. Nothing works. Seems to have stopped working on Feb 2,
2010.

I am affected by the same issue. I just flashed my HTC magic with the lastest
firmware
from HTC (the one with Sense UI) and when I reinstalled SMS backup it now tells
me that
I should enable IMAP and retry username and password. IMAP has been enabled for
years
and no username or password changes. Even tried with or without "@gmail.com"
with any
luck.

Interestingly I just found it works but only using WIFI and not 3G.

I work for Tmobile and I have a customer that is getting the error message
after downloading SMS
Backup.... Log In Error..Please make sure you enable IMAP in your Gmail
Settings and check your user
name and password.....we have checked the IMAP settings and it is enabled, even
changed the
password to his gmail and uninstalled and rebooted and installed again and
still the same error. We
reccomend this app a lot to our customers so its very frustrating. Nothing
seems to be working.

christoph wrote me when i had this problem and gave me this link:
http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2008/10/advanced-imap-settings-for-gmail.html
- I added that imap-thing from labs and saw that the SMS label already had a
tick in the box - so i removed the tick, put it there again, and then tried
backing up from my android - AND IT WORKED!
hope this helps

For anyone still having this problem, try this--it worked for me:

I was using non-default apps to access email (Gmail app, Yahoo mail app, K9
mail) and had this problem. I had not set up any accounts in the default email
app (which is just called 'Email'). After I went into this app and added my
gmail account as per these instructions:
https://support.google.com/mail/bin/static.py?hl=en&ts=1668960&page=ts.cs&rd=1,
SMS backup then worked.

SMS Backup+ didn't work on my Optimus T on T-Mobile. Found that I had to log in
to Google Play and push it from my laptop in order for it to work fine.
