Reply to sms in gmail

I would love to be able to reply to SMS messages in gmail (like a normal 
email) that would use the phone to send the SMS reply.

Not sure exactly how this could  be accomplished but here are a few of my 
thoughts:

-  Could the incoming messages have a "reply to" email address of something 
like your.username+friendsmobilenumber@gmail.com (e.g. 
steve.smith+07123456789@gmail.com). Therefore you would get the email 
yourself, and it wouldn't actually be sent out at this point. You may also 
have to set up a filter in gmail so these email skip the inbox.

- The android app would pick up the email and forward it as an sms message 
to the number in the address

I don't know of the restrictions you would encounter, but is this feasible?

Great app btw, i use it everyday. I find it very useful when at work, to 
look at incoming messages rather than using my phone directly, which is 
where this idea came from :)

Where did you get the idea that

steve.smith+07123456789@gmail.com

would actually point to steve.smith and the rest of the string (the telephone 
number)
can be evaluated? Is that a special feature of gmail or did you just make that 
up?

It is a feature of gmail. If you include a plus sign in the email address then 
everything after (and including) the + is ignored. It is useful in gmail as you 
can 
then use filters to sort your emails.

I know, everytime i think about it, it seems like it should be pretty 
straightforward

1. Modify the mail created for gmail to include a modified reply-to address
2. Have the app pick up any new emails in this format, and send them via sms 

The main issues would be: sort out a reply to address that would be robust for 
all 
situations and if it is actually possible to let an app send sms messages, but 
since 
there are apps to replace the inbuilt sms manager i guess it would be :)

The SmsToMail App (Pro/Paid Version) does sms by email reply. I use it on my 
HTC Hero
and it works flawlessly. So it is feasible.

wow! thanks for the reply. It looks like this app already does what i've been 
suggesting, just instead of reply email address, it uses the subject

I came here to suggest this feature almost exactly how you described it. 
having the number in the mail is best because then you can add it to that 
contact and creaste a text convo rather than reply (also you can text any 
number then).

if they were hidden from inbox - but marked undread (aka unsent) then the 
phone looks for those unread messages and sends them, and marks them 
read so as not to resend.

i would be happy to put a bounty on this feature if others do. £5 or even £2 
isnt much if you really want the feature but the pooled bounty is a good 
payoff for the dev. whos up for it?
