HIP Fortifications and LOS #1373

Nice to have: automatic display of HIP fortifications (except minefields but incl. roadblocks) when in LOS of any GO enemy unit as per A12.33 Rationale: forgotten so often when done manually

@BrunoASL2023 In another time and place, I actually did some work that would do this. So, from a coding perspective this is doable.

However, this would generate a major pushback from the user community. There are many, many players who would not like this at all. Meaning it would have to be something that could be toggled on/off. Nothing wrong/hard about that, we have a whole bunch of options in preferences that players can turn on or off.

Unfortunately, we have a whole bunch of options in preferences that players can turn on or off, which can be unwieldy for players to manage. The preferences window now has 11 tabs, each of which have multiple options. We have consider the useability implications of adding more options.

You have every right to add this idea to our list here. If you actually want this to be implemented, I would suggest that you post this idea in the various discussion forums (GS, FB, Discord, BGG) and see if you can get a groundswell of support. That would increase the chances of getting this done.

I can indeed post my suggestion to other websites . I am just curious to know why you expect a major pushback for sthg which can remove the burden of remembering at the right time what is in LOS or not, especially when it can have a significant impact on the game. For instance, in one of my games, I suddenly remembered, 2 turns after I should have, I had to show an HIP foxhole (with a unit inside) in a critical location . My opponent decided to stop the game as he considered he would have made his last moves very differently and it was too complicated to unwind the game. Even though this was quite rough as an attitude, he was right though. Just an example.

Fair question. There are those (and I can name names) who have said to be that VASL should be as close to the cardboard game as possible and that any “enhancements” are wrong.

Now some of that is just people being jerks and I don’t pay much attention to it.

But when VASL begins to implement rules logic then I think it is appropriate to see if people want it or not. Some people will argue that the burden of remembering to check los is part of the skill set of players (on both sides) and should be left to them.

In many cases we can handle this by implementing an on/off preference that allows players to use a feature in VASL or not. We would probably want to do this with respect to your suggestion.

There may be other issues that people will raise.

Hi. Thanks for getting back to me. IMHO it shld be a toggle on/off as there are some exceptions to the auto display of the fortification (eg unveiling only when the TEM is used like night rules, PTO and I may forget other cases). I leave to you of course the decision based on feasibility (as u said, the preferences tabs shldnt look like a cathedral organ desk lol). I am just trying to give a heads up on how VASL can further (as it does already for many things like LOS, SA,...) help the player focus on tactics more than on logistics ;-). Cheers
