I have a range of logos I've started work on for Xarino, which I created in
XaraLX.
I've added these to the downloads section.
There's a chronology to the logo set. Because the project is in it's initial
stages
- I propose a 2-stage branding.
Stage one logos would be used while the project is gaining momentum - and makes
use
of a blue 'band-aid' emblem as the 'X' in Xarino, to signify it's main aims;
patching
and completing functionality of the product.
Stage two abandons the band-aid emblem and replaces it with a typographic X.
I'd
propose that this logo would be used once the project has gained momentum and
includes it's own functionality, and is an individual product in it's own right.
Have a look and let me know what you think.. obviously these are prototypes,
and just
a start.

great work - much better than my initial attempts :-),
I think the staging is a great idea and the logo creates a great strong image
for the
project with lots of room for adaptation for themed about pages etc. Just one
thing,
for the bandage ones I think that the meaning of the image needs to be clearer,
more
obvious lines in the centre and some little dots in the middle (only in the
centre of
the plaster) would make it more obvious what it is. Maybe something like this
as a
reference: http://www.supportingyourclaim.co.uk/images/plaster_wall.jpg. You
could
even add a crack to the black surrounding the X for added effect (I don't know
if
this imagery would be too strong or not).
If we are re-branding the icon this would be a great idea to think about
whether we
could do this whilst releasing new icons (as OpenOffice did with 3.0) to
improve the
general feel of the program as well as attracting intrest. The gnome-colors
theme for
inkscape seems great and if I could create a script to convert inkscape themes
for
xarino that would give us great flexibility in the future.

thanks for the encouragement :) Re. your suggestions, I completely agree - I'll
have
a go at making the graphic more clear and post the results once they're done.
For the time being, while I agree with the principle, I don't think it's worth
changing the current program function icons. I'm imagining that some of the
people
who will be using this version of the program will be XaraLX users, and
changing the
interface might make the transition more difficult than it has to be?

You are right, with any change in icons we need to be very careful about
upsetting
users. Maybe we could just create nice vector versions of them whilst keeping
the
same imagery for each (the move from a jagged arrow to an anti-aliased one
should not
be too hard for users). As our main userbase is longterm Xara users we do need
to be
careful not to change too many core UI features but the current icons are
looking
terribly out of date so a change in their visual apparently but not what they
depict
should serve both objectives.

attached is a list of all uses of the string 'xaralx' in the code - I might
just try
replacing them with xarino using perl and create a branch with the result (to
see
whether it breaks anything)
