Feature Request : Instant VM Recovery

Context

• XO origin: the sources / XO Appliance
• Versions:
  • Node: FILL HERE
  • xo-web: 5.36.0
  • xo-server: 5.36.3

Expected behavior

Current behavior

If the underlying backup storage support quick file copy e.g. BTRFS with cp --reflink=always We can :

1. Copy the full vhd using reflink which will create CoW copy to nfs export dir
2. Apply vhd deltas
3. Export via nfs
4. Create nfs-sr on pool/host if not yet created
5. Create vm, attach vdi an so on..

This would make recovery almost instaneous

Maybe this can be done with XO on a ZFS pool?

Or better like VEEAM:

• spin up a temporary NFS-Server
• add a temporary SR that points to that NFS-Server
• boot the VM from that
• (optional) live migrate the disks to the permanent SR

Instant recovery can be done using DR or CR.

Closing because I don't see a use case that can't be solved using DR/CR. Discussion is open though :+1:
