Suppose we are exposing a large dataset to the public and we would like to have some control over it. There would be a process of application/registration and a user would get some sort of key to access the data. This information should then be used to set up connection (which seems again makes the connection stateful).
Without this there is no chance that our software could be adopted by places such as genome hub
