Kinect does not show up in "Select your depth camera" #10

When I connect my Kinect via USB and run the Ubi Displays Beta program, I do 
not see my kinect in the depth camera list. When I click "refresh in the same 
window it states in the bottom bar of the windows "Detected Kinect: 
USB\VID_04..." No yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager, it shows as 
"Kinect for windows device" with driver 1.6.0.476 and Port_#0002.Hub_#0009.

I am running windows 7 Professional SP1 32 bit.
I installed Kinect SDK 1.6 from Microsoft, then Ubi Displays Beta software and 
then I connect the Kinect (also tried different order and SDK 1.7 on a similar 
machine to no avail)

I would appreciate any good ideas :-)

Oops, just now I browsed through the already solved cases. It was the one with 
the cat and the cable that struck me.... I just had'nt turned on the power. 
Apologies for the inconvenience caused and consider this issue closed on my 
part.
Looking very much forward to play with it .-)

No problem!  Good luck with your experiments.  I will be releasing a new 
version soon with OpenNI, WM_Touch, TUIO and better WebGL support :) Totally 
open to feature requests!

Excellent, sounds great with the new version. 
I never managed to get the touchpart working with the screen. Perhaps the 
laptop is to weak, CPU hovers around 90-95% when running the examples, e.g. 
footballpage. Perhaps I'll try updating to SDK 1.7. and a stronger laptop.

I am working in disaster response, and I am trying to bring GIS to the field, 
and it would be nice to have a constant interactive map running for overview 
and coordination purposes (it was your Bing map feature that caught my eye 
especially). That would be ArcGIS or perhaps Google Earth (with ArcGIS 
integration)
Doing Powerpoint presentations and browsing pictures would be nice.
Perhaps also being able to sweep/browse through set of dashboards showing e.g. 
operational data, BCC world, webcam (Skype/CCTV) social media feeds, daily 
security advices etc.

Perhaps, it does require a fair amount of CPU--I've found an i5 or higher is 
better for larger numbers of fingers :)

Your project sounds really interesting.  If you think it would help, feel free 
to email me some "ideal worlds" designs I'll advise you on how you could go 
about implementing them with Ubi Displays (and some tips about what to expect). 

If I remember correctly, the Kinect license agreement requires that you don't 
use it in any safety-critical situations -- which might be a bit tricky in 
disaster response though!

Hi again. I just tried with a powerful laptop (I7) and SDK 1.7 but I still 
can't get the fluid footballs to respond. 
I am sure it is a very simple error on my behalf. 
I calibrate the 4 dots, select and adjust the area of where to project the 
image (I am running it of a projector) and drag the "fluid" html file (also 
tried the other html files) from the folder to the window which then turns 
green. 
I am normally running Firefox but I also tried doing it from the latest version 
of Chrome, however I am not able to get the "screen" to respond to my input, I 
am not blocking the view of the Kinect, and I can see my arm/fingers moving on 
the screen.
The kinect is about 1½ meters from the screen.
Any suggestions?

BTW, thanks for your reply, it is highly appreciated. In terms of design, 
perhaps what I am contemplating is perhaps "picture in picture" tiles with each 
with a stream of the info/functionality mentioned above. So you have e.g. nine 
windows/tiles where you can click on each of them and it will bring you to that 
webpage/application. Alternatively they are rotating in a slideshow like a 
kiosk for interaction.
All of them should be able to be integrated in html except for the Skype 
application (for which the Kinect camera/microphone could also be used).
That html/application part of it is not my strong side, I understand there 
could be some issues with clickable buttons for instancein Ubidisplay?
The display would be in HQ and as such only be an aid in the overview of the 
operation response. I would either display it on the wall or perhaps build a 
glasstable with the projector below as the Microsoft Surface Table/Pixelsense.

Hi Jacob,

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you, I've been away this weekend.

Can you try the "Like Button" display and see if that works.  If it does, and 
the touch display doesn't then I have an updated file which will fix the issue. 
:) 

To use multi-touch on generic web pages (i.e. ones from the internet which do 
not use the special javascript in the sample files) you will need to enable the 
experimental multi-touch mode.  To do this, double click on the "Surface 0" 
name and then check the checkbox in the little dialogue box that pops up.  The 
next version of the software will make this process MUCH smoother. :)

I really like your idea btw -- I think its totally do-able with Ubi Displays. 
You would probably want to make each tile a surface, then drag the content that 
you want onto each tile.  You can use the little Javascript API to send data 
between the different tiles in the HTML (I can give you an example if you 
like).   This could be used to make the tile / table send a signal which says 
("put the Skype on the main screen" or "focus on the GIS") etc.

As I may have misunderstood some details, if you want to sketch out what you 
have in mind -- I can send you some examples of how to do it with the toolkit 
if you like? :)

Hi again. Impressive that you are taking the time respond :-)
I just tried, and the "Like" button works but not the "Fluid" file, so if an 
updated file could help that would be lovely.
In regards to multi-touch on generic web pages, the generic display resolution 
is 800x660 (as I recall it) 
Do I have to change accordingly to my setup (current is 1920x1080)?

I haven´t gotten to the Tile stuff yet, the idea of putting the selected 
application to the main screen/expanding it, is exactly what I had in mind.
I'll se how far I can make it myself, but if I encounter problems, help would 
be very  much appreciated.

Aha!  In that case, I am pretty certain I know what the problem is.  It has 
actually been resolved in the latest version too.  If you shoot me an email on 
john@highwire-dtc.com then I will send it through.

Wrt the resolutions, the default is 800x600 but this is totally customisable.  
If you double click the "Surface 0" name, it will bring up an options box for 
that surface.  This allows you to change the render resolution of the display 
(and do a few other things).  

However, if you want to use these displays to show portions of a windows 
desktop rather than web pages, that feature will be available in the next full 
release of the software. :)
