You get ctrl by pressing and holding either "z" or "m" and then pressing whatever else key. For "ctrl+c" you press and hold "z" and tap "c" or press and hold "m" and tap "c", etc. Alt is mapped on "hold x" and "hold n".
Hope this helps,

I tried doing that, but it doesn't seem to work

Did you try with "hold m" as Ctrl?
Do the layers work? Like to get the numbers and arrows etc? Does hold space for shift work?
Might be a qmk firmware issue? I dont know

Everything else seems to work like numbers and capital letters and !@#..., but it seems that holding down z makes the bottom row not accept taps, registering them as holds. Same thing happens holding down m

I don't really know why it's doing that. I left my keyboard at the office, I'll recompile and upload the files again and see if I get errors. I'm using a pro micro microcontroller and compiling/uploading on windows.

Just tried it again and everything is working for me. I had uploaded a pre-compiled hex file (link: https://github.com/qmk/qmk_firmware/tree/master/keyboards/alpha/keymaps/vderm) too, did you give that a try?
I compiled my files on my laptop running linux and uploaded it using the QMK Toolbox on windows.
